Requirements for a Moving Image
Production
For out media product, we had to
produce a DepicT Short. It was for the DepicT 90 second competition. These were
the rules for the competition.
Other types of media product are
-Television series
-Motion pictures
-Web series
Other distribution methods for
these are
-Televisions
-DVD/Blu-ray
-Internet
There are several different types
of funding for film, television and other moving image productions. The most well-known
one would be the British Film Institute. Each year, the British Film Institute
invests over £26 million of lottery fund to support film development, production
and distribution activity in the UK. The budget is set to rise to £30 million
by 2017.
Here are a few films that have been funded by the British Film Institution, their directors, and the year they were released.

However, there are other methods of getting the funds for a film, television programme and other productions.
Some of these include:
-Sponsors
-Banks; getting a loan
-Personal funding/private capital
-Competitions
-Crowd Funding
Things you might need to spend
money on for a moving image text:
-Props
-Costumes
-Equipment
-Actors
-Location
-Crew
-Editing Software
-Travel
-Copyright
-Costumes
For our DepicT short, we only had a
few things we had to get, and most of it was provided by the college. We had to
get costumes, props, equipment and makeup. The costumes, props, and equipment were
provided to us by the college, but we had to get the makeup ourselves. This was
the only expense we made
Our team was only three people, but we all worked together with our specific roles to get the job done. I was the camera person, Alex was in the video and Xene helped me by directing and filming bits when I couldn't.
I have some experience working with a camera as I have filmed before for a small acting group I was a part of a year ago. I also studied Photography and Film Studies last year and was the camera person for our film during that as well.

We were given a time limit for
pre-production paperwork, filing and editing. For each of these, we were given
six lessons each. We managed to reach the deadlines set for us.
The best way to obtain equipment in a professional moving image
production would be to fire it from a facility house.
Below this is an example of costs for hiring equipment from EPIC Studios.
Location RECCE’s are used to see whether a location is right for
what you are planning on filming there. They are used by one person being the
“scout” and going to the location and writing down then discussing whether it
is right.
Location Releases are used to get
permission to use the location that was scouted in the RECCE form. These are
mostly used in indoor locations. Locations such as parks and fields you mostly
don’t need them for.
For our DepicT short, we chose an
office in college, and two parks just outside from the college. The reason we
chose the office is because it resembled a police officer’s office and we
thought it would look better than a classroom.
We chose the first park as it was
more secluded and there was no one about. It was better for filming the death
scene at the beginning as no one would interrupt.
We chose the Rec Centre park as
there were benches there for the police officer to sit on as he died, and there
were plenty of places for the other victims to lay and pretend they were dead
without anyone getting in the way and enough space for it to seem like they
were different places.
For the office, we chose it because
it was the closest thing to a police precinct as we could find. It was accessible
to us the whole time and we were able to go in and out of their as we pleased.Copyright is the legal right to a piece of music, a book, a photograph etc. Copyrighting is illegal in certain circumstances. For example, if you take or use a piece of music without consent from the people who produced, wrote and performed the music, then you are infringing Copyright. For example, if a piece of music is copyrighted, you cannot use it within your piece you are creating without getting written legal consent from whoever the piece belongs to. There are different rights that have to be taken into consideration.
Copyright affected our DepicT project by not allowing us to use any music that already existed. We had to create our own music using GarageBand.
OFCOM rates and regulates most T.V channels to see if it fits the guidelines. OFCOM has certain powers to regulate the BBC's licence fee funded television and radio services aimed at audiences in the UK, but not the World Service which is grant-in-aid funded. BBC rate there own shows so they don't have to pay advertisements. The T.V tax goes towards this.
The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC), is a non-governmental organisation founded by the film industry in 1912 and is responsible for the national classification and censorship of films within the UK. The BBFC rates films and T.V. Hence the ratings U, PG, 12a, 15 and 18.
A trade union is an organised association of workers in a trade, group of trades or profession. Trade unions are important to pass information between workers and management. They help to pass new rules that will benefit the workers.
PACT and BECTU are trade unions for the media industry. It ensures that workers in the media and entertainment industries get paid properly. This can be anything from an independent film to a blockbuster.
Trade associations are when an industry trade group, a business association or a sector association is an organisation that is funded or founded by businesses that operate in a specific industry.
The difference between Trade Unions and Trade Associations is that Trade Unions are run by workers, and Trade Associations are run by businesses.
Ollie,
ReplyDeleteWell done for finally completing this task - about time!
You have covered everything needed and you have provided some broad examples. In order to get the higher grades you must develop the points you make further and also find more, and more specific examples, e.g., when you discuss funding, you should not only find examples like the BFI Film Fund, but you should then look to find a film that received funding from them.
You have said that copyrighting is illegal - be careful here as I know what you mean (based on the rest of the sentence) but it is infringement of copyright that is illegal. You could use music that already existed but only if some conditions were met - what were they?
More is needed on Ofcom and the power they have over all broadcast media (use print screens).
Define unions and associations in a little bit more detail and in your own words - try to give some real and / or hypothetical examples.
Good start,
Ellie
